What to Expect in an Initial Consultation

For many of our clients with spinal cord and brain injuries, this is their first venture into the legal system. We have developed this page to let you know what to expect when you contact Harris, Powers & Cunningham.

Do I Have a Case?

Most of our clients want to know if they have a case. The answer is not always as easy to answer as one might think. When you contact HPC, we will take information about your case by phone. The next step will be to arrange a meeting between you and our lawyers. That meeting will either be at our office, at the hospital, or at your home.

During this meeting, we will ask you to provide us much information as you can about the facts of your case. You will also have an opportunity to ask us about the civil justice system in Arizona and how a personal injury lawsuit works.

We examine each case carefully. One of the keys to determining whether you have a case is whether your brain injury or spinal cord injury was caused by someone else. Sometimes an injury is no one's fault and no recovery is possible.

What Will it Cost Me?

Our law firm will advance all costs of investigating and developing your case. We will invest our time, not knowing what the outcome will be. Our fee, if we are successful, will be a percentage of the recovery before expenses are deducted. We will keep track of the expenses we pay up front, such as expert witness fees, and those expenses will deducted from any compensation we recover for you. The Arizona Supreme Court requires the client to be liable for expenses (other than attorney fees) regardless of the outcome of the case.

Putting Your Life Back Together

Every case is very individualized. Our lawyers will evaluate your medical needs and life-care planning needs and project those costs over a lifetime. If you can return to the workplace, we will determine what training or vocational rehabilitation you will need. If you can't return to the workplace, we will seek to replace that income. Many of our clients are receiving minimal rehabilitation services at the time they contact us. Our lawyers will advocate for better services while we are developing your legal case.

Our lawyers have a passion that drives us to help people who need help. We have been doing it since 1981. So far we have been very successful at obtaining compensation for people who need it the most.
